Throughout the course of the We Are Afrika exhibition, the World Bank Art Program hosted virtual artist talks. These talks brought together contemporary artists and development professionals to discuss topics ranging from female education to the future of digital for creative industries. Each talk was a panel discussion led by Marina Galvani, Curator of the World Bank Art Program.

    Hear from Musopa Kalenga, the 2019 Blog4Dev World Bank Group competition winner from Zambia, in a moderated discussion with Ally Jape, videographer and tour guide for Zanzibar; Kim Karabo Makin, an artist from Botswana; and Moky Makura, Executive Director of Africa No Filter. The panelists explore what it means be the creator of your own story and the power of culture and tourism in building new narratives for African countries, even during the COVID pandemic.

    Join us for a conversation exploring environmental citizenship, natural adaptation,  resilience, and the visual world of animism and ecology. Hear from climate specialists, youth activists, and artists, all facing the challenge of green recovery in Africa. Moderated by Douglas Dubois-Card Sebamala. Panelists include: Fabrice Monteiro, Senegalese/Beninese photographer; Elizabeth Wathuti, Kenyan climate activist; and Arame Tall, a World Bank adaptation and resilience specialist.

Their conversation explores how the nature of work is changing, the impact of COVID-19 on the education gap (particularly for women), and how multimedia artist Modupeola Fadugba uses her work to question how to improve Nigeria’s education system.
