Encouraging livable city development through innovative solutions for climate change
The World Bank Tokyo Development Learning Center (TDLC) in collaboration with the Sustainable City Infrastructure and Services Global Solutions Group (GSG), the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), the City Climate Finance Gap Fund, and the Disaster Risk Management and Resilience GSG, is organizing a Technical Deep Dive (TDD) on Cities and Climate Change from December 2 to 6, 2024. Delegations from seven (7) countries, consisting of approximately 32 representatives from World Bank client countries and accompanied by World Bank staff engaged in climate-resilient urban development projects, will participate in this Technical Deep Dive (TDD).
As urbanization continues to grow, it is becoming increasingly urgent for cities—responsible for 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions—to implement effective climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. Cities need to gather and analyze climate change data, develop mid- to long-term action plans, and collaborate with all stakeholders, including private companies and citizens to implement concrete measures. These efforts should occur not only at the city level but also at the neighborhood and building levels, effectively utilizing both grey infrastructure and nature-based solutions.
This TDD will specifically focus on climate change action plans, climate finance, and public-private partnerships that advance mitigation and adaptation efforts. Additionally, it will observe and learn about private-sector-led initiatives taking place in the Daimaru-Yu area of Tokyo (including Otemachi, Marunouchi, and Yurakucho), the Tenjin district of Fukuoka, and Canal City Hakata.
