Power System Decarbonization Pathways

The World Bank has performed exploratory decarbonization analyses to identify policy and investment priorities to deeply decarbonize the power sector in select countries. The modeling methodology was shaped to provide results to inform decision makers of the magnitude and urgency of action to deeply decarbonize and to estimate the scale of investments in power generation capacity to be financed. The results should not be interpreted as a forecast, but as a projection of the scale and speed of necessary interventions. Additional, complementary analyses will be required to plan specific investments.

The results shared through the dashboard are intended to support analyses that might use these results to inform additional analyses, for comparison with the results of similar decarbonization modeling, and to inform high-level policy and strategy.

Relationship to CCDRs

A subset of the scenarios and results that are available in the dashboard were used to inform Country Climate and Development Reports (CCDRs). CCDRs help countries prioritize the most impactful actions that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and boost adaptation and resilience while delivering broader development goals. The CCDRs build on data and rigorous research to identify main pathways to reduce GHG emissions and climate vulnerabilities and provide concrete, priority actions to support a low-carbon and resilient transition.

The dashboard shows the power system decarbonization analysis conducted for the CCDRs in more detail.
