The mighty Ganga is one of India’s most important environmental and economic resources. The Ganga Basin is home to over half of India’s people and provides over one-third of India’s surface water; over 40 percent of India’s GDP is generated in the densely populated Basin. But the Ganga river is today is facing pressures from human and economic activity that impact its water quality and flows. The World Bank is supporting India’s efforts to rejuvenate the iconic river and build the institutions and infrastructure needed to make the Ganga a cleaner and healthier river.
