BENGALURU, February 23, 2023 – Today, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with Nadia Calviño, First Vice President of the Government of Spain and Minister for the Economy and Digital Transformation.
President Malpass thanked Vice President Calviño for Spain’s strong commitment to Ukraine, which includes €100 million in guarantees for the Health Enhancement and Lifesaving (HEAL) Ukraine Project to address the urgent need to rebuild health systems in the country, as well as €48m for the Public Expenditures for Administrative Capacity Endurance (PEACE) Project.
President Malpass and Vice President Calviño spoke about Spain’s forthcoming presidency of the European Union and its priorities in Latin America, including debt sustainability.
Discussing the challenges facing middle income countries, President Malpass highlighted his concern at the growing number of countries in debt distress, and the need for swifter debt action for both low- and middle-income countries facing high debt burdens.
President Malpass and Vice President Calviño also discussed progress on the World Bank Group’s evolution of its mission, strengthening of its operating model, and improving of its financial model and capacity.
