MINSK, September 7, 2017 – Ms. Satu Kahkonen, the World Bank Country Director for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine, visited Minsk today to introduce Mr. Alex Kremer, the new Country Manager for Belarus, and to discuss World Bank Group support for the period 2018-2020.
Mr. Kremer, a UK national, joined the World Bank in 2005. Before coming to Belarus, he was the Country Manager for Moldova (2014-17), and for the Kyrgyz Republic and Turkmenistan (2010-14). Mr. Kremer holds a Ph.D. in economics from London University and a Diploma in Business Administration from Edinburgh Business School.
“The World Bank has been a steady partner to Belarus for 25 years, with tangible results that improved people’s lives,” said Satu Kahkonen, World Bank Director for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine. "Mr. Kremer will continue our partnership that builds upon the remarkable social achievements of Belarus and helps the country find solutions to its structural economic challenges.”
Since the Republic of Belarus joined the World Bank in 1992, lending commitments to the country have totaled US$ 1.7 billion. In addition, grant financing, totaling US$ 28 million, has been provided to various programs - including those with civil society organizations. The active investment lending portfolio financed by the World Bank in Belarus includes eight operations, totaling US$ 931 million.
