The World Bank and Partners Recognize Results-Driven Leadership in Development

WASHINGTON, March 6, 2017— Today, at the 2017 Global Leadership Forum, hosted by the World Bank Group, the first ever Jose Edgardo Campos Collaborative Leadership awards will be presented to five exceptional leaders from around the world. These leaders, from government, private sector and civil society in Bangladesh, Colombia, the Philippines, Tonga and Tunisia have helped their countries make significant progress in the fight to end poverty and boost shared prosperity. Their work includes the empowerment of women, the Colombia peace process, tackling infant mortality, pushing for access to primary education, and improving how public servants serve citizens.

The Jose Edgardo Campos Collaborative Leadership Awards are presented for distinctive leadership that has mobilized ideas, people and resources. The Awards were instituted in the memory of Jose Edgardo (Ed) Campos, a World Bank staff member who advanced the importance of collaborative leadership, worked on successful reform programs including in his home country of the Philippines, and was a pioneer working on these issues at the World Bank. Ed served as Practice Manager for Leadership and Governance passed away in the spring of 2014.

“Ed Campos inspired colleagues across the World Bank Group through his strong commitment to delivering results for the people we serve,” World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim said. “We are proud to honor his legacy through this new awards program. It is my pleasure to congratulate the 2016 recipients, who have helped their countries make significant progress in the fight to end extreme poverty.”

One lifetime award is being given to recognize contributions and results over the whole of a career, rather than or in addition to single contributions. The regional awards are given to recognize leaders in regions around the world for their work in collaborative leadership. The recipient of the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award is Mayor Nacianceno Mejos Pacalioga, Dumingag Municipality, Zamboanga del Sur, from The Philippines, for his work as a pioneering public servant whose collaborative leadership style is characterized by dialogue, inclusive partnerships, results-based programs, and responsive governance mechanisms.

The regional award recipients are:

• Sir Fazle Abed, Founder and Chairman of BRAC, Bangladesh is the recipient of a 2016 Regional Award for South Asia, for his work on his leadership role in Bangladesh’s development, and specifically in reducing infant mortality and accomplishing universal access to primary education.
• Paula Gaviria Betancur, Presidential High Counsellor for Human Rights, Colombia, is the recipient of a 2016 Regional Award for Latin America and the Caribbean, for her leadership in the development of the Victim’s Unit, and contributions to the peace accord between the Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.
• Emeline Siale Ilolahia, Civil Society Forum of Tonga, is the recipient of a 2016 Regional Award for East Asia and the Pacific for her efforts in building and supporting coalitions for change in Tonga with a particular focus on empowerment of women.
• Sofiane Ben Mohammed Sahraoui, Founder, Middle East & North Africa Public Administration Research, Tunisia, is the recipient of a 2016 Regional Award for Middle-East and North Africa, for his work on the establishment of a groundbreaking research network – the Middle East & North Africa Public Administration Research with a focus on improving public administration.
   

The 2017 Global Leadership Forum organized by the Global Partnership for Collaborative Leadership in Development (GPCL4D) will bring about 200 partners, leaders and practitioners from government, academia, civil society, and other international development organizations working in areas of collaborative leadership. This diverse, global and cross-sectoral group of thinkers, work to apply and integrate leadership practices to solve key development challenges. GPCL4D puts leadership and coalitions at the center of international development practices. Through interactions and sharing of experiences, the Forum seeks to surface leadership approaches to bring together diverse stakeholders to achieve results in divided societies.
