Rooted Mushroom: A Story of Sustainable Jobs and Growing Success in Sint Maarten

Stephane-Ferron

Stephane Ferron, Business Manager, Sproute B.V

Stephane Ferron’s journey started with a clear and ambitious goal: to establish a sustainable, locally sourced mushroom business that would not only provide a healthy, organic food source for Sint Maarten but also contribute to the local economy by creating jobs and reducing environmental impact.

At the heart of this vision was a commitment to sustainability. By utilizing locally sourced ingredients and reducing dependence on imports, Sproute BV became a key player in the island’s push towards more sustainable food production. But what started as a simple mushroom-growing operation evolved into something far more impactful—a model for combining waste management, renewable energy, and innovative farming techniques, all while creating meaningful job opportunities for the local community.

Building from the Ground Up

In the early stages, Stephane kept risk minimal, focusing on perfecting the mushroom-growing process with sterilized wood sourced from local suppliers. But the true breakthrough came when Sproute BV began working with waste products—spent grain from nearby breweries and organic coffee grounds donated by local coffee roasters. Not only did this help reduce local waste, but it also improved the substrate's nutritional value, contributing to the growth of healthy, high-quality mushrooms.

A pivotal moment in Sproute BV’s evolution came with the purchase of a pressure cooker, an essential piece of equipment funded by the Enterprise Support Project, a grant and loan package provided through the World Bank-administered Sint Maarten Trust Fund, to support the recovery and resilience of the country’s micro, small, and medium sized enterprises with direct financial assistance. The project’s aim is to contribute to the restoration of economic activity designed to support local businesses. This new autoclave cut sterilization time from 12 hours to just three, allowing the team to scale up production while also improving efficiency.

"The time saved has been invaluable, especially during busy periods when power outages used to halt production,” says Sproute BV’s Business Manager, Stephane Ferron. To ensure their operations run smoothly, even during power outages, the team also invested in backup power solutions. In the future, solar energy is on the horizon to further reduce their environmental footprint.

Creating Jobs Through Innovation

One of the most rewarding aspects of the project is its ability to generate local jobs. Sproute BV is not just about growing mushrooms—it's about creating opportunities in a variety of fields, from sustainable agriculture to equipment maintenance and logistics. Every stage of the process, from substrate preparation to harvesting and packaging, creates valuable work for the community. As the business grows, so does its ability to provide more jobs, contributing to the resilience and recovery of Sint Maarten’s economy. Sproute BV currently supplies 4 supermarkets weekly, 3 restaurants consistently, 20 individuals consistently, 5 yachts consistently and has occasional one-off customers.

Managed by Sint Maarten’s National Recovery Program Bureau, the project played a crucial role in helping small businesses like Sprout BV recover and grow. With the project’s budget of US $25 million, it has adjusted over time to focus on supporting new micro and small businesses and providing capacity-building through training and business coaching. It offers a lifeline to enterprises that are crucial to local job creation and sustainability.

The Path to a More Sustainable Future

Sproute BV’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its cultivation process. Initially, Stephane imported mushroom cultures, but over time, she has developed her own mycelium cultures from the best-performing local mushrooms. These self-sustaining cultures are genetically adapted to thrive in Sint Maarten’s unique climate, ensuring higher success rates and stronger mushrooms.

Through careful sterilization, meticulous attention to detail, and an innovative approach to waste recycling, Sprout BV has created a self-reliant and sustainable ecosystem. The project not only contributes to the local economy by creating jobs but also promotes a healthier lifestyle for the island’s residents by providing fresh, nutritious food.

A Bright Future for Jobs and Sustainability

Looking ahead, Sproute BV is poised for long-term growth, both in terms of business and job creation. The project plans to scale up production, incorporate even more locally sourced materials, and continue innovating to further reduce environmental impact. Stephane is excited about what the future holds, knowing that every step she takes toward sustainability also means more jobs and a healthier, stronger community for Sint Maarten.

By nurturing both the land and the people of Sint Maarten, Sproute BV is setting an example for how small businesses can create lasting change—combining economic growth, environmental sustainability, and job creation in a way that benefits everyone.
