  • The illustrations highlight water, sanitation, technology and humor.
  • A Peruvian artist collaborated on the global calendar.

The World Bank’s Water and Sanitation Program (WSP) recently launched its 2013 calendar, where humorists from around the world shared their unique visions of the problems and multiple questions associated with water supply, sanitation and hygiene and their relationship with poverty.

Throughout the years, the WSP has worked with different partners in developing countries to address the challenges of health and hygiene.

In a world where 2.5 million people still lack access to adequate sanitation services, the calendar is a crucial tool for reminding us that challenges remain with regard to this issue.

Water, Sanitation and Technology

Over the past decade, mobile phone subscriptions have increased by over 800% worldwide. In fact, today, more people have access to a cell phone than to a clean toilet.

Having all these cell phones in the developing world has created an ideal opportunity to use mobile technologies to provide new, innovative solutions in different sectors.

The calendar owes its success to the collaboration of talented artists from around the world to create critical messages with creativity, passion and humor.

Young Peruvian artist Jesús Felix - Díaz was one of those collaborators. He used his immense talent to call attention to the services provided to people living in poverty, in addition to addressing some misconceptions regarding the role that technology can play.

Besides his work with the WSP, Jesús Felix - Díaz has created several covers and illustrations for magazines such as Poder, DedoMedio and Moda.
