What is the Advancing Innovative Methods to Promote Learning (AIM4Learning) Program?
The Advancing Innovative Methods to Promote Learning (AIM4Learning) Program is a $1.54 billion regional program funded by the International Development Association* (IDA) and International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). Designed to address the learning crisis in Eastern and Southern Africa, the program will use the latest innovations and technologies to enhance education quality while supporting the rapid expansion of school enrollment. AIM4learning will help countries in the region reduce school dropout rates, increase completion rates, and optimize the funding of basic education.
What will the program do in Comoros?
Strengthening Education for Better Education Outcomes (REACH) is a comprehensive initiative under AIM4Learning. The objectives are to increase equitable access and improve learning outcomes in pre-primary and primary education in Comoros, enhance the quality of education, and ensure equitable opportunities for all students. With a total investment over $23.32 million from IDA and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), the program aims to provide a strong foundation for lifelong learning and improved educational outcomes.
“With 87% of Comorian 10-year-olds unable to read a simple text, there's an urgent need to enhance educational opportunities. This project provides resources to improve teaching quality and primary education completion rates, ensuring all children reach their full potential.” Idah Pswarayi-Riddihough, World Bank Country Director for Mozambique, Madagascar, Mauritius, Comoros and Seychelles
The project includes the following components:
1) Implementing a consistent policy package to improve teaching quality, including implementing the first phase of a national curriculum reform aimed at foundational learning, and supporting teachers to implement the curriculum reform.
2) Transforming the school environment to support student learning and well-being, by supplying schools with adequate, resilient infrastructure and school based digital learning centers; and extending schools community hubs for enhanced support to student health, nutrition, and parent engagement.
3) Building capacity for sustainable sector reform, by Strengthening institutional planning, workforce management and implementation capacity; and supporting project management and capacity.
Who will benefit?
REACH encompasses all public schools in Comoros and is poised to benefit the entire student and teacher population in the country. This includes 136,469 students, with girls representing half of this number, and nearly 4,000 teachers, of whom more than a third are women.
