Manage Successful Field Research teaches all aspects of implementing development research in the field. It is intended to improve the skills and knowledge of research practitioners and partners, familiarizing them with best practices, critical issues in research implementation, recurring challenges, and cutting-edge technologies.

Through the course, participants will gain practical skills in preparing for field research, ensuring quality field research, and communicating with implementing partners and clients. Through lab sessions, participants will gain practical skills in software for data acquisition, processing, and analysis. There will be a strong emphasis throughout on research ethics, privacy, and reproducibility. By the end of the course, participants will have the skills they need to implement high-quality field research.

This course will take place in-person in Washington, DC, from May 6 to May 10, 2024. The course is designed for World Bank staff and consultants directly involved with field research or monitoring and evaluation. The course will consist of a combination of lectures, panel discussions, case studies, discussion, and quizzes. Lab sessions will be offered in parallel tracks, with different options based on software preferences and skill level.

Participants will learn to:

  • Plan for and supervise high-quality field research
  • Develop a data quality assurance strategy
  • Monitor implementation to ensure fidelity to research design
  • Assess research data quality and provide real-time feedback
  • Integrate monitoring and evaluation systems with research data
  • Design and program instruments for field surveys or data entry
  • Develop and manage high quality data systems for field research
  • Utilize software tools such as Stata, R, and survey software to work with research data
