GPS Seminar Series

The Global Program on Sustainability (GPS) Seminar Series shares the latest knowledge on how policy makers and the financial sector can integrate environmental sustainability considerations into decision making. Knowledge sharing and learning are central to GPS' goals, and these virtual sessions present an opportunity to highlight real-life case-studies, ongoing work and lessons learned from countries that are beginning to look beyond GDP and traditional financial metrics to account for environmental risks and opportunities.

For almost 20 years, the Changing Wealth of Nations (CWON) series has been pushing the frontier of knowledge to track the sustainability of economic progress and measure comprehensive wealth across the globe. The World Bank recently launched the latest edition of the series, The Changing Wealth of Nations 2024 - Revisiting the Measurement of Comprehensive Wealth , incorporating improvements to the methodology and expanding the asset base to measure  wealth for 151 countries.

Mangrove ecosystems were included for the first time in the 2021 edition of the report, which showed the critical value of mangroves as coastal protection assets from 1995–2015. In the 2024 edition, new data for 2020 was included on global mangrove distribution to assess the benefits of mangroves in reducing floods and expand the data series. Moreover, biophysical estimates of the global carbon storage in mangrove ecosystems have been produced by developing a dataset of biomass and soil carbon stocks between 1996 and 2020.

This webinar will explore the crucial role mangroves play in protecting coastlines from flooding and storing carbon. The session will delve into the cutting-edge methods of the CWON technical reports Building Coastal Resilience with Mangroves and  Estimating Global Carbon Storage of Mangrove Ecosystems, and introduce the underlying remote sensing datasets which are available to users.
