Poonam Gupta is a Lead Economist for India at the World Bank. She joined the World Bank in 2013 in the Chief Economist Office. Prior to joining the Bank, she was the Reserve Bank of India Chair Professor at NIPFP, a Professor of Macroeconomics at ICRIER, Associate Professor at the Delhi School of Economics and an Economist at the International Monetary Fund, Washington DC, where she served in the Asia and Pacific Department, European Department, and the Research Department.
She has extensive operational and policy experience across countries and regions, including on China and India. Her research has been published in leading academic and policy publications such as the Journal of Finance, Journal of International Economics, IMF staff papers, World Bank reports, World Bank Global Economic Prospects, Africa’s Pulse, and East Asia and Pacific Update. Her work has been featured in The Economist, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Economic Times, Times of India, Business Standard and Financial Express. She holds a PhD in International Economics from the University of Maryland and a Masters in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics.
