Nicholas Woolley is an Economist in the Office of the Chief Economist, Africa Region at the World Bank specializing in issues related to macroeconomics and economic growth, with an emphasis on the importance of physical capital on productivity development. He was previously an Assistant Professor of Economics at Trinity College and acting Country Economist for the World Bank’s MTI practice in Togo.
He also coordinates the Country Political and Institutional Assessments for the Sub-Saharan Africa regions, including the annual publication of the CPIA Africa report. The CPIA assesses the quality of a country’s current policy and institutional framework on an annual basis, with regards to how conducive that framework is to fostering poverty reduction, sustainable growth, and the effective use of development assistance. These scores are used as a benchmark both for policy engagement with governments and for the allocation of development assistance.
Nicholas holds a DPhil and MPhil in Economics from the University of Oxford and a BA in Economics and Philosophy from Cornell University.
