Mark R. Thomas

Country Director, Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela, World Bank

Mark Thomas is Country Director at the World Bank for Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela, based in Mexico City, responsible for leading client relationships and delivery of the Bank’s financial and advisory services in two of the World Bank’s highest-exposure countries. Prior to this appointment, he was Director of Country Credit Risk, leading a team responsible for sovereign credit ratings, country exposure management, portfolio risk, capital adequacy and provisioning, and structured finance proposals.

Thomas is a seasoned economist with operational experience across Latin America, Africa, Europe, and Asia, including assignments based in Brazil, Turkey, and Mexico. He has published articles and book chapters covering sovereign debt, economic growth, economic crises, labor markets, and regional policy. Before joining the World Bank, Thomas helped build a Paris-based start-up management consultancy, and he has held adjunct positions at Georgetown University, Princeton University, and the University of Montreal.

He holds a PhD in Economics from Princeton University, a Master’s in Economics from McGill University, and a BA in Mathematics from the University of Oxford. He is a Freeman of the town of Llantrisant in Wales.
