From Kenya to the World Bank Group
Martin Leboo grew up in Kenya under the guidance of parents who highly valued education. His mother, a teacher, and his father, a civil servant, instilled in him a deep respect for learning and community service. They laid the foundation for Martin’s aspirations to contribute to positive global change. In September 2023, these aspirations became firmly rooted when Martin began his appointment as a World Bank Group Young Professional (YP). The YP program is well-renowned as a highly competitive and uniquely rewarding opportunity to join the World Bank Group. Martin’s exceptional experience, extensive studies, and deep passion for global development led to program acceptance and important career opportunities.

A Catalyst for Professional Growth
Highly respected for its rigorous training and development opportunities, the YP program offers unparalleled exposure. Martin notes the program’s unique rotational assignments which allow participants to gain knowledge across different sectors within the World Bank Group. He says, “The ability to rotate within the organization is like resetting your career. It gives you the chance to learn new industries and sectors that you might not have had the opportunity to explore otherwise.”

Through a comprehensive Risk and Sustainability training program, Martin had the opportunity to further expand his knowledge and capacity to bring impact. He describes the experience as, “…a one-month intensive training that underscored the World Bank's investment in its staff. The experience was a 'wow' moment, highlighting the organization's commitment to developing its people."

Exceptional mentorship opportunity is another YP program hallmark. And this has been very meaningful to Martin. He recalls his colleague who carefully advised and guided him through the initial stages of the program. "He checked in regularly, offering advice and support. This mentorship was pivotal in navigating my first year," Martin recalls.

Growing into the Future
Through Martin's work as a YP, he has the opportunity to contribute solutions to critical issues, such as climate change, poverty, and economic development. His work brings together his personal and professional goals: “I want to play my part to improve the well-being of the poorest individuals around the world.”

Martin is thrilled about the lasting relationships he is building through the program. "The program's cohort system creates a nurturing and enriching environment where you bond with other talented, passionate young professionals. This network is invaluable, providing support and collaboration opportunities throughout your career."

Looking ahead, Martin envisions a future where he continues to leverage the skills and experiences gained as a YP to support global change.
