The Step by Step toolkit, developed by the World Bank with external contributors, aims to equip teachers with resources that can help students from age 6-17 better understand and manage their emotions, thoughts, impulses and behaviors, form and sustain positive relationships, and make the most out of life by making responsible decisions and pursuing meaningful goals. The Step by Step toolkit offers a series of practical lessons and support materials designed to be implemented in the classroom by the teacher. Read more
Challenges in Grades 9 and 10
Students become increasingly focused on themselves as they seek to develop a coherent identity. They begin to reflect on the values and norms with which they grew up, as they continue to develop their own identities and purposes in life. In some cases, they may question, or even reject, the values they have learned at home or in school. This kind of adolescent rebellion is a relatively common stage, although it may be very hard for parents and teachers to understand and accept. Nevertheless, it is important to recognize that this is a natural part of growing up.
Along with this greater self-awareness and self-discovery come increased fluctuations in teens’ self-esteem and emotional instability. At times they seem to have a very high self-esteem and an inflated ego and sense of uniqueness, while at others they seem to feel bad about themselves and go through stages of frequent self-criticism, sadness, and anger. The intensity of their emotional highs and lows is tied to the hormonal changes that occur during puberty and their growing ability to reflect on their own thought processes.
Role of the Teacher
The teacher’s job in Grades 9 and 10 is aimed at helping them to understand themselves, to learn and practice strategies that increase their self-control, and to understand the risks and consequences of engaging in high-risk behaviors.
