Data, AI, and Emerging Technologies

AI working group

Data hosting, computing and sharing—empowered by interoperable platforms, and cutting-edge technologies—are accelerating sustainable development in the AI era. The World Bank is committed to helping countries unlock their potential in these transformative domains.

Under data infrastructure, efforts focus on building resilient and environmentally sustainable data centers and scalable cloud solutions to meet the rising demands of digital governance and economies. This includes enabling governments and businesses to securely adopt cloud technologies while fostering investments in modern data infrastructure. A market-driven approach aims to attract private capital, expanding access to secure, sustainable, and scalable data infrastructure globally. These steps are critical to bridging digital divides in computing resources, AI systems, and other advanced technologies.

The World Bank prioritizes building robust Artificial Intelligence (AI) foundations and deploying scalable solutions tailored to country- and sector-specific needs in emerging markets and developing economies. Key actions include establishing ethical governance frameworks to guide responsible AI adoption, strengthening data ecosystems to ensure accessibility, quality and security, and expanding AI infrastructure (e.g. computing, specialized labs) to support innovation.

Beyond AI, the World Bank explores the transformative potential of other existing and emerging technologies such as blockchain, robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Initiatives emphasize practical, impact-driven solutions that address critical global development priorities, such as enhancing supply chain transparency, advancing climate resilience, and improving productivity and job-ready skills.
