  • Unlocking Efficiency: The Global Landscape of Building Energy Regulations and Their Enforcement

Buildings account for 37% of global CO2 emissions, yet more than half of the world lacks mandatory energy efficiency standards for new construction. The World Bank's report, Unlocking Efficiency: The Global Landscape of Building Energy Regulations and Their Enforcement, examines building energy codes across 88 countries, highlighting disparities in adoption and enforcement, and offering actionable recommendations to bridge these gaps. Discover how tailored strategies can drive energy savings, reduce emissions, and support sustainable urban development.

Leveraging Building Energy Efficiency Codes to fight climate change

Addressing the issue of building emissions is front and center in the fight against climate change. But developing countries lack the knowledge on how to leverage legal and institutional frameworks to battle climate change, especially by mandating minimum energy efficiency performance standards in new and existing buildings. This global dataset is an attempt to bridge this knowledge gap.

As climate negotiations at COP29 in Azerbaijan draw to a close, the building sector stands at a critical juncture. Buildings account for 34% of global CO2 emissions, making them a central battleground in our fight against climate change. The challenge is particularly urgent in rapidly urbanizing regions, where unprecedented construction activity risks locking in decades of excessive energy consumption.
