Fukuoka is often considered one of the most livable cities in the world! It regularly ranks high in various global livability and quality of life indices. Fukuoka offers a great balance between city life and nature. It boasts a rich cultural scene, including festivals (like the famous Hakata Gion Yamakasa), a thriving food culture, and historical sites. Also, it is known for its beautiful parks, like Ohori Park, and its proximity to nature, providing residents with plenty of outdoor activities. Fukuoka is becoming more international, with increasing numbers of expats and foreign students, contributing to its diverse, open atmosphere.Livable cities are realized through solid infrastructure development and innovative urban vision.

The World Bank Tokyo Development Learning Center (TDLC) has been collaborating with Fukuoka since 2018 on diverse knowledge exchange activities covering various topics. Among these topics is on wastewater management. And the TDLC has benefited from strong support from city’s Road and Sewerage Bureau.

On March 14, 2025, Mr. Toshinori Amamoto, Chief Executive of Road and Sewerage Bureau of Fukuoka City Government and his team visited TDLC. The meeting reflected on past engagements, including on sewerage, flood control, and climate change. Under TDLC’s Operational Support program, Fukuoka received a delegation from Ahmedabad, India and share knowledge on how to improve the sewerage management system. The city also hosted the Technical Deep Dive (TDD) on Water Secure Cities in February 2024 where the World Bank client countries and cities learned the city’s water management.  The TDD on Climate Change in December 2024 also featured Fukuoka City including the site visits presenting how the city mitigates the impacts of the climate change.

The meeting also discussed areas where TDLC and Fukuoka can work together on, including hosting future TDDs, participating in just-in-time knowledge support, in global conferences organized by the World bank, and contributing to a range of case studies.
