The Challenge
Assam is the largest state in the Northeast of India that has witnessed significant development since the end of a decades-long insurgency. However, it is still one of the least developed states in India, with GDP per capita about 36 percent below India’s average. Its untapped growth potential lies in its strategic location and natural endowments. Assam has a strong resource base for tourism, but the sector is underperforming in terms of job creation and investment.
Mission
Tourism can serve as a vehicle for economic development in Assam. A C-JET funded grant is supporting the Government of Assam to implement action plan for the Tourism Policy of Assam 2022, which is hleping to increase private investment, jobs including for women, and overall competitiveness of firms in tourism and allied sectors in the state. Further, the sector is a significant female employer. Given the abysmally low female labor force participation rates in the country, supporting the sector has been crucial.
