The Challenge

With support from the World Bank and various trust funds, including CJET, the efficiency of phytosanitary procedures is being enhanced in various countries.

Mission

In Burkina Faso, the digital platform that allows countries to electronically exchange e-Phytos (electronic phytosanitary certificates) with each other through a central hub, quickly, accurately, and at a low cost, has been introduced to streamline phytosanitary procedures for fruit exports. Burkina Faso’s adoption of this new digital solution is seeking to strengthen trade competitiveness and facilitate greater participation in global markets. The digital platform reduces the risk of loss, damage, or fraud to the certificate, as well as decreases the administrative load on border agencies and businesses.

Kenya, Cote d’Ivoire, and Tanzania are other examples where the WBG is seeking to effectively implement the e-Phyto platform solution in target countries in a sustainable way that improves access to markets through trade facilitation and ensures complementarity with other government automation initiatives. At the global level, CJET, together with other programs, has been co-supporting developing countries in the revision and implementation of the International Plant Protection Convention e-Phyto solutions and other measures such as single windows in target countries. The CJET’s supported work is also contributing to other trade facilitation initiatives by allowing` border agencies to better use the data collected through automation, particularly `about enhanced risk-based border management, and border agency cooperation in the least developed countries and small island countries such as Fiji, Cote D'Ivoire and Zambia.
