How does the World Bank work with local governments to evaluate technology options based on local financial and operational capacities? BBL Date - June 20, 2019 Inadequate solid waste management (SWM) directly affects public health and the environment. Poorly managed waste impacts cities' livability, competitiveness and can exacerbate social inequality. Improvements in SWM practices have positive impacts on cities' environmental and social sustainability, in addition to overall economic competitiveness. Additionally, these improvements may create jobs and open opportunities for private sector participation and have positive and substantial impacts on overall economic competitiveness. The choice of waste management technologies to deploy in a given city depends highly on the local context and capacity. This Bite will illustrate how the World Bank works with local governments to evaluate technology options based on local financial and operational capacities. It will specifically provide examples of how Korea uses technology and innovation-based solutions to reduce the amount of waste generated while increasing recyclability.
