The East–West Roads Project links Almaty to Khorgos, the primary road border-crossing point between Kazakhstan and China. This project—a collaboration between the Government, the World Bank, and the private sector—has improved highway quality, introduced a tolling system, and facilitated the construction and operation of a new state-of-the-art customs checkpoint, which is enabling more seamless cross-border freight transport.
