Cities around the world are undertaking various initiatives to combat climate change, and Tokyo is a prime example. In this interview, Toshi H. Arimura, Professor of Political Science and Economics at Waseda University, explains how the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, specifically by promoting energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy, and electric vehicles. He also discusses how Tokyo’s cap-and-trade program (where building owners can trade credits if they reduce emissions beyond the cap set by the TMG) can inspire low- and middle-income countries to adopt similar models.
