Handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent transmission of disease—not just the coronavirus but also diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid. But for 3 billion people around the world who do not have access to clean water and soap, this small action to prevent infection remains out of reach. The World Bank is working closely with countries and partners to ensure communities have access to fixed and portable handwashing facilities, soap or alcohol-based hand rubs, and reliable water supplies.
