What is driving the emergence and transformation of cities and towns in developing countries? In this Policy Research Talk delivered on March 4, 2019, World Bank Senior Economist Forhad Shilpi discussed recent research on the interactions between spatial and structural transformation and how these are shaped through transport and migration. Her research points to a significant gap in the policy dialogue: the problems in a city can’t be solved by focusing on the city alone, but require a spatial general equilibrium perspective.
