A new World Bank and the International Labor Organization (ILO) report: “Exports to Jobs: Boosting the Gains from Trade in South Asia” breaks new ground by studying the impact of exports on local labor markets in South Asia. As populations increase the need for gainful employment rises concurrently. The Exports to Jobs reports finds that while Sri Lanka’s labor market is plagued with challenges such as high rates of informality and wage disparities, higher exports explain the conversion of about 800,000 jobs from informal to formal in India. An increase in scale and diversification of exports and an increase in participation of disadvantaged groups could bring the biggest reductions in informality.
