The small island of Gorée, off the coast of mainland Dakar in Senegal, used to experience frequent blackouts. Residents could stay for weeks on end without access to power. Today, thanks to the Electricity Sector Support Project, there is an underwater cable linking the island to the main grid in Dakar and pre-paid meters that allow residents to pay for services directly from their mobile phones. Residents of Gorée can now enjoy reliable access to power.
