Sewage pollution and water shortage are causing a serious emergency in Gaza, posing a threat to two million people, their health and the environment. Despite numerous challenges, the long-awaited construction of the new North Gaza Wastewater Treatment Plant is now complete and ready for operation. The World Bank-financed project will provide a long-term, sustainable wastewater management solution for over 400,000 Gazan citizens. The project was co-financed by the European Investment Bank, French Development Agency, Government of Belgium, the European Commission, the Swedish International Development Agency, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Portugal and Croatia.
