China has one of the highest cesarean delivery rates in the world. Of 16 million babies born in 2010, approximately half were by cesarean. But C-sections are needed in only about 10% to 15% of deliveries, according to the World Health Organization. The high rate of C-sections in China has raised concerns on a number of fronts, as medically unnecessary C-sections pose more health risks for both mothers and babies.
