Beirut, August 5, 2020 — The World Bank Group is deeply saddened over the loss of life, injuries and the devastating scale of damage and destruction caused by the explosion that shook Beirut yesterday afternoon.
Building on global experience from disaster-hit countries, the World Bank Group stands ready to deploy its expertise to undertake a rapid damage and needs assessment and to develop a reconstruction plan as per international standards. The World Bank Group is also ready to share lessons and experiences from across the world in managing post-disaster recovery and reconstruction processes.
In addition, the World Bank Group is open to participating actively in a platform with Lebanon’s partners in order to mobilize public and private financial support for reconstruction. The World Bank Group would be also willing to reprogram existing resources and explore additional financing to support rebuilding lives and livelihoods of people impacted by this disaster.
The World Bank Group has been a long-standing partner of Lebanon and reiterates its commitment to stand by the Lebanese people who have endured many economic and social challenges and who have constantly demonstrated strength and resilience in overcoming difficult times.
