Agriculture has traditionally dominated Afghanistan’s economy and has been one of the main contributors to its economic growth. A lack of growth, however, has led to a decline in its share of Afghanistan’s overall economy. Despite this, the sector employs 40 percent of the total work force, and more than half of Afghans living in rural areas contribute to agriculture.
The report Jobs from Agriculture in Afghanistan explores the sector’s role in explaining the dynamics of rural employment and suggests that with the right mix of policies and investments, the agriculture sector has the potential to play a key role in poverty reduction and sustained growth in Afghanistan, primarily through job creation, improved productivity, and inclusiveness.
