Restoring Urban Services in Yemen

Yemen's Integrated Urban Services project has focused on improving critical services including water and sanitation, transportation, energy infrastructure and solid waste management.

Yemen’s cities have been very badly affected by six years of conflict, with the destruction of urban infrastructure widespread. Through the Yemen Integrated Urban Services Project (YIUSEP), 234 kilometers of urban roads in eight cities have been rehabilitated, access to critical services has been restored for more than three million beneficiaries, and 63,000 megawatt-hours of clean solar energy has been created for use in hospitals and schools. The project has focused on improving critical services including water and sanitation, transportation, energy infrastructure and solid waste management.

World Bank support enables people like Amna Ali, Head of the Microbiology Laboratory, Sanitation Cooperation, and her colleagues to continue providing support and services to the water and sanitation sector in Yemen. Through IDA’s support and in partnership with UNOPS the lab in the water and sanitation cooperation in Sanaa is up and running. With new equipment, the team is providing more accurate results.

Sa’adah is one of the governorates targeted by the Yemen Integrated Urban Services project (YIUSEP) Funded and supported by the World Bank’s IDA and implemented by UNOPS. The project has supported the city by improving storm water drainage through newly constructed channels, box culverts and water breakers in existing water pathways.

Conflict has had a strong impact on the access to water and adequate sanitation services for the Yemeni people. Untreated sewage water overflow has also become one of the main causes of the spread of deadly diseases including cholera. The World Bank’s IDA helped Sa’ada to overcome this problem.
