In celebration of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics, awarded for groundbreaking achievements in machine learning and innovation that have paved the way for revolutionary advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), we are excited to announce a high-level panel on “GenAI 4 Development Impact”. Hosted by the World Bank with support from Google.org, the event will take place on October 23, from 5 PM to 6:30 PM (EST) in Washington, DC.
This event will bring together leaders from the World Bank, governments, private sector, academia, and policy to explore the transformative potential of generative AI (GenAI) in tackling global development challenges. If implemented with caution and strict ethical guardrails, GenAI offers innovative solutions to challenges across food insecurity, education, health, and disaster response, among others.
A key focus will be on how GenAI can be leveraged as an enabler for development efforts by closing data gaps and supporting policymakers with their decisions. As part of the Google.org GenAI Accelerator, the World Bank has developed an AI assistant – ImpactAI – which harnesses the power of large language models to extract insights from impact evaluation research in development and provides access to causal evidence. By bringing research findings to decision-making, ImpactAI will empower decision-makers to allocate the $220B in annual aid and trillions in annual impact investing more effectively.
The World Bank will present this tool at the event, and a panel will discuss the wider applications of GenAI to pressing development challenges. This event highlights the commitment to using AI responsibly for sustainable development and marks a pioneering step in applying AI for global impact.
