Manage Successful Field Research 2023

Arianna Legovini is founder and head of the Development Impact Evaluation (DIME) Department of the World Bank. She established this group in 2009 creating a model of collaboration between economic development research and practice to optimize the returns to development finance and build governments capacity for data and evidence-informed country policies.

Maria Ruth Jones co-founded and now leads DIME Analytics, an initiative to improve the quality, transparency, and reproducibility of empirical research. Through DIME Analytics, she creates public goods to benefit the global research community, such as Development Research in Practice, the DIME Wiki, the Manage Successful Impact Evaluations course, and the Manage Successful Surveys course. Maria also works on impact evaluations in agriculture and transport; current projects focus on the impacts of large-scale, rural infrastructure projects in Rwanda. Maria joined the World Bank in 2009. Previous roles at DIME include coordination of the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program impact evaluation portfolio (2012–16) and a program of impact evaluations with the government of Malawi (2009–11). Maria has an MA in international relations / development economics from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, and a BA in Economics and Spanish from Amherst College.            

Aidan manages DIME’s unit on Infrastructure and Climate Change. After completing his MSc in Statistics at University College London and MSc in Economics for Development at the University of Oxford, he joined DIME in South Africa, exploring the effects of a large-scale slum upgrading project implemented across the country. He’s a Senior Economist focusing on identifying sustainable, equitable and efficient ways to expand water, sanitation, electricity and broadband services with the aim of reducing poverty and spurring climate-compatible economic growth. 

Ankriti Singh works as a Research Assistant at DIME, where she contributes to the development of data quality assurance tools for the DIME Analytics team. She has hands-on experience in supporting data collection, monitoring, and analysis for rural development impact evaluations. Ankriti joined DIME in 2019, after completing her masters in economics from Tufts University.

Avnish Dayal Singh is a Data Coordinator at the Development Impact Evaluation (DIME) department at the World Bank. He manages the DIME Wiki, and assists the DIME Analytics team with conducting reproducibility checks, periodic trainings, and other technical and analytical tools associated with development data. He also coordinates the work of the MyIE team, which tracks and disseminates annual reports on DIME’s global portfolio of impact evaluations through the MyIE dashboard. Avnish has a Masters' in Quantitative Economics and Econometrics from Columbia University (New York), and a Bachelors' in Economics from the University of Delhi (India). His interests involve combining development data with lessons from economic theory and field studies to improve the efficacy of development policy mechanisms globally. Previously, Avnish has worked at Ernst & Young (India), and the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University.

Benjamin Daniels is a Research Fellow in the gui2de group at the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University. Benjamin’s research focuses on the delivery of high-quality primary health care in developing contexts. His work on data from India, Kenya, South Africa, China, and other locations has highlighted the importance of direct measurement of health care provider knowledge, effort, and practice. He has supported some the largest research studies to date utilizing clinical vignettes, provider observation, and standardized patients. Benjamin is a member of the QuTUB Project team. Benjamin also works with DIME Analytics to improve the reproducibility, transparency, and credibility of development research. This work comprises code and process development, research personnel training, and direct support for data analysis and survey development. These tools include software products like iefieldkit and ietoolkit, research resources like the DIME Wiki and the Development Research in Practice resource handbook.

Chloë Fernandez is a Research Officer in the Gender, Economic Opportunity & Fragility unit at DIME. Her objective is to bridge the gap between evidence and effective policies and operations in the most challenging contexts. She works in high-pressure environments with a focus on social protection interventions for vulnerable populations. Beyond project-specific work across the Sahel and DRC, she also co-leads DIME’s Fragility, Conflict, and Violence Program, providing intellectual and operational directions to World Bank programming. Chloë is also driving DIME’s 15million USD partnership with the World Food Programme. Implemented across 15 countries, the engagement aims at testing new solutions to promote resilience, gender equality, and better emergency responses.

Eric is a Research Analyst at the Development Impact Evaluation department at the World Bank. Hi is a data & evaluation professional with expertise in research management, quantitative data analysis, data visualization, econometrics, and generating impact from research. He has 4 years of experience leading evaluations in East and West Africa, with a focus on agriculture, finance, nutrition, health, and employment sectors.

Manuel A. Alculete Lopes de Araújo has been the Mayor of Quelimane since 2011. Mr. de Araújo’s extensive experience spans civil society, academics, business and politics, and is deeply involved in advocate for issues linked to urban and climate change. He plays a key role within institutions such as UCLG as well as ICLEI, where he is a member of the Global Executive Committee and Global Co-Chair for Resilience. In 2019, Araújo was elected Deputy Chair of the National Council of the Mozambican Mayors Association (ANAMM) Congress. Araújo holds a PhD from the University of East Anglia, and an MSc from SOAS, University of London.

He lectured in Economics, Development Economics, International Relations and Comparative Foreign Policy at Catholic University of Mozambique, Pedagogic University, the Instituto Superior de Ciencias e Tecnologias de Mocambique, Universidade A Politecnica and the Instituto Superior de Relacoes Internacionais

Holly Krambeck is the Program Manager for the World Bank Data Lab, housed in the Development Data Group. The World Bank Data Lab improves internal coordination between World Bank data talent; expands pro-bono partnerships with private firms and academic institutions; and builds staff awareness and capacity to deliver modern data solutions to SDG challenges. She also founded the Development Data Partnership, a partnership between international organizations and companies, created to facilitate the responsible use of third-party data in international development.

Luis Eduardo San Martin is a Data Coordinator at the World Bank's Development Impact Evaluation (DIME) Analytics group, where he conducts code reviews to ensure the computational reproducibility of DIME's research and provides data science support for DIME's portfolio of impact evaluations. Before joining DIME Analytics, Luis Eduardo worked as Data Analyst for the Peruvian government and as Research Associate for Innovations for Poverty Action, where he designed and implemented the data acquisition components of impact evaluations. Luis Eduardo holds an MSc in Computational Analysis and Public Policy from the University of Chicago and a BSc in Economics Engineering from Universidad Nacional de Ingenieria in Lima.

Luiza Andrade is a Data Analytics Lead at Development Innovations Laboratory (DIL) at University of Chicago. Her work focuses on incorporating non-traditional data sources into development research, promoting transparency and reproducibility in social sciences, and developing software tools to simplify research data work. Prior to joining DIL, she was a Junior Data Scientist at the World Bank's Development Impact Evaluation (DIME) department. Luiza is a Brazilian national and holds a BA and an MSc in economics from the University of Sao Paulo.

Manuel Ramos-Maqueda is a researcher at the World Bank’s Development Impact Evaluation (DIME) department. His primary research interests are in development, public, and behavioral economics. His research focuses on the design, implementation, and evaluation of public policies in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in the areas of governance and digital technologies. As part of DIME’s Data and Evidence for Justice Reform (DE JURE) program, he uses randomized trials, administrative data, and machine learning to improve our ability to measure, enhance, and evaluate justice systems. 

Marta is a Senior Product Specialist in the Customer Success team for Dobility, focusing on helping users achieve their objectives using SurveyCTO. She works on new ways to help users get the most out of SurveyCTO. Prior to joining Dobility, Marta worked for CESO Development Consultants, an International Development consultancy, and NOVAFRICA Research Center. Throughout her career, she supported and coordinated impact evaluations, monitoring and evaluation projects, and data collection processes at national level in the areas of education, energy access, and financial inclusion. She lived in Mozambique, Angola, and Sao Tome and Principe. She holds a Master’s Degree in Economics from Nova School of Business and Economics.

Nausheen Khan is a Research Analyst in Development Impact Evaluation (DIME)’s unit on Gender, Economic Opportunity, and Fragility at the World Bank. She works primarily on managing and designing IEs covering labor market and social protection interventions, often with a focus on gender. Her work also focuses on fragile, conflict & violence (FCV) contexts. Her main areas of interest are survey design, data analysis and translating evidence-based research into policy. Prior to DIME, she worked at Khan Foundation, a non-government organization in Bangladesh focusing on democracy, social development and human rights. She holds a Master’s degree in International Development Policy from Georgetown University, and a Bachelor’s in Economics and Politics from Mount Holyoke College.

Nupur Savani is a Program Coordinator at the World Bank in the Development Impact Evaluation (DIME) department. At DIME, Nupur coordinates program activities and operations for DIME Analytics, a team supporting data quality and knowledge sharing at DIME. She also supports the Knowledge Management and Communications team at DIME. She has a Bachelor’s degree in International Affairs with specializations in International Development and Africa from the George Washington University.

Robert Marty is Research Analyst in the Development Impact Evaluation Department at the World Bank where his work focuses on impact evaluations of transportation investments, including economic corridors and road safety. In particular, his work focuses on leveraging innovative data sources for impact evaluations, such as satellite imagery, crowdsourced data and private sector data sources. Prior to joining the World Bank he worked at the AidData Center for Development Policy. He holds an MS in Computational Operations Research and a Master of Public Policy from the College of William and Mary.

Rony is a research assistant at The World Bank, Development Research Group where he has been evaluating an adaptive experiment in Cameroon, an RCT in Ukraine, and building programming packages for impact evaluations. Overall, his research interests are development economics, education, impact evaluations, and conflict. Notwithstanding that his work has been alongside several professors and researchers, he has also independently developed a portfolio of data projects that can be of help for future research, and, especially, for Nicaragua that can be found in the data tab of this website.

Roshni Khincha is a Research Analyst at Development Impact Evaluation (DIME). She works as a Data Coordinator for the DIME Analytics team in which she develops best practices and trainings on data and survey workflows. She also coordinates a window of multi-country evaluations on school based programming collaboration with WFP. Her areas of interest are research management, measurement, data quality assurance, and data analysis.

Sekou Kone is a Development Policy Designer at the World Bank's Development Impact Evaluation Unit, DIME Gender, Economic Opportunity and Fragility. As Research Officer, he supports the development of a DIME program on strategic policy design and technical assistance for the Sahel CMU countries (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, and Niger). His work currently focusses on Local governance, and Natural resources management and Climate change. Before joining DIME, Sekou worked as statistician at the Burkina Faso civil servants retirement agency and Operation officer in a consultant firm. He holds a Master’s degree in Applied Economics and Statistics in Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Statistique et d’Economie Appliquée (ENSEA) in Cote d’Ivoire, and a Master in Economic, with focus on Macroeconomics and development management at the Université Joseph KI-ZERBO in Burkina Faso.

Steven Glover is a Research Analyst at DIME, working on the design and implementation of the rural development impact evaluation portfolio in Mozambique. He specializes in primary data collection, stakeholder coordination and field supervision of rural development impact evaluation programs. Prior to joining DIME in 2015, Steven had worked as an Overseas Development Institute (ODI) Fellow at the Ministry of Agriculture (MADER) in Mozambique, and afterwards with the Development Economics Research Group (DERG) at the University of Copenhagen. He holds an MSc in Development Economics from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, and a BSc in Economics from the University of York.

Tatiana is an ET Consultant at the Development Impact Evaluation department at the World Bank. She holds a double Master in Public Policy and Public Administration with a concentration in International Economic Policy and a specialization in Data Analytics and Quantitative Analysis. She has more than six years of work experience in policy design and management. During her studies, she specialized in monitoring and evaluation of public policies and her main fields of interest are policy analysis and international development.

Trevor Monroe is a Program Manager with the Analytics and Tools unit that resides within the Development Economics Data Group. Trevor leads strategic initiatives that improve organizational capabilities to put data into action through collaboration and partnership, technical and capacity support. Currently, he is leading the “Innovations in Big Data Analytics” program, which works to accelerate the use of non-traditional data in World Bank research and operations.

Victor Orozco is a Senior Economist with the Development Impact Evaluation (DIME) department in the World Bank. His research focuses on mechanisms to promote behavior change at scale and includes impact evaluations in the areas of health, education, gender and environment. He founded and leads the World Bank’s research program on Mass Media and Entertainment-Education, which he runs in close collaboration with researchers and practitioners from governments, the World Bank, development partners and academic institutions. He holds a Master’s in Public Policy and Economics from Princeton University and a PhD in Social Intervention from Oxford University.
