On October 12, 2022, global leaders from developing and donor countries and international organizations held a vibrant discussion on what it will take to scale up disaster risk reduction and build resilience to meet the challenges ahead.。
The event was hosted by the World Bank’s Global Practice for Urban, Disaster Risk Management, Resilience and Land, the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery, and the Independent Evaluation Group. Mr. Kentaro Ogata, Deputy Vice Minister for International Affairs, Ministry of Finance of Japan gave a presentation noting Japan has ingrained in its culture the importance of building resilience to calamities.
The Independent Evaluation Group's report on the World Bank's support for reducing disaster risks from FY10 to FY20 notes that GFDRR and its partners including the Japan-World Bank Program for Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Management in Developing Countries has played a major role in making disaster risk reduction a more prominent priority by financing analytical work and technical assistance as well as developing a critical mass of disaster experts to support World Bank project teams.
Mr. Kentaro Ogata, Deputy Vice Minister for International Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Japan gave closing remarks, stating:
“Japan is committed to working with the World Bank, GFDRR through the Japan-World Bank Program for Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Management in Developing Countries, and our partners to support countries to enhance their preparedness by strengthening their emergency response capabilities to manage compounding risks.”
