Join World Bank Africa Chief Economist Andrew Dabalen for the launch of the Fall 2022 edition of Africa’s Pulse, the region’s biannual macroeconomic analysis.

In a conversation with a young medical doctor from Ghana, Ellen Peprah (winner of the World Bank Blog4Dev competition), Dabalen will discuss ways to address the multiple challenges facing the region including slow economic growth, food insecurity, and high debt, as well as opportunities to transform lives through implementing coherent monetary, fiscal, and debt policies, building resilient food systems, and ensuring the poorest households are protected.

    Andrew Dabalen

    AFRICA REGION CHIEF ECONOMIST, WORLD BANK

    Andrew Dabalen is the World Bank’s Africa Region Chief Economist since July 1, 2022. The Chief Economist is responsible for providing guidance on strategic priorities and the technical quality of economic analysis in the region, as well as for developing major regional economic studies, among other roles. He has held various positions including Senior Economist in the World Bank’s Europe and Central Asia Region, Lead Economist and Practice Manager for Poverty and Equity in Africa and most recently, Practice Manager for Poverty and Equity in the South Asia Region. His research and scholarly publications focused on poverty and social impact analysis, inequality of opportunity, program evaluation, risk and vulnerability, labor markets, and conflict and welfare outcomes. He has co-authored regional reports on equality of opportunity for children in Africa, vulnerability and resilience in the Sahel, and poverty in a rising Africa. A Kenyan national, Dabalen holds a master’s degree in International Development from University of California - Davis, and a PhD in Agricultural and Resource Economics from University of California - Berkeley.

    Ellen Peprah is a medical doctor from Ghana with interests in health systems strengthening, youth development and primary care delivery. In 2020, she won the World Bank Blog4Dev competition for sharing her ideas on ending child marriage in Ghana and has been an avid advocate for women and adolescent health ever since. She also coordinates the Commonwealth Youth Health Network - a network that brings to the forefront the voices of young people from 56 member states of the Commonwealth on matters relating to global health policy and programming. Ellen practices primary care medicine in Ghana where she gets to connect with people from all walks of life and solve health challenges in low resource settings.
