  • Climate change is one of the greatest global challenges of our time. Around the world, cities, countries, and regions have committed to ambitious climate targets, with Japan being no exception and committing to achieving net carbon neutrality by 2050.

Against this background, the World Bank Tokyo Development Learning Center (TDLC), in collaboration with the Smart City Institute Japan (SCI-J) organized a multidisciplinary expert discussion on the pathways to find, pilot, and scale up low-carbon solutions. This session convened top level experts and thought leaders in Japan from various fields and expertise to engage in an open discussion on solutions and trajectories toward a low carbon and resilient future of our cities.

This session explored where Japan stands in the global efforts toward addressing climate change and how these Japanese experiences and new ideas can inspire and support developing countries in their path for green growth and reduction of carbon emissions. Synergies born from convening experts from different fields will drive creative and innovative solutions to the climate challenge. Topics explored in this session include:

    1. What are the critical steps that need to be taken to achieve zero carbon cities? What are the first steps and the main issues that need to be addressed? How do you see cities evolving as we go towards carbon neutrality?
    2. Now that we face a common goal in the fight against climate change, will this be an opportunity to tackle existing challenges that we face in our cities? What perspectives and approaches should we take to be able to think beyond silos or sectors to achieve this transformation?
    3. What is your vision for the future in 2030 and 2050? What will our world look like for our children and grandchildren as we transition to carbon neutrality?
