9th World Water Forum

March 21-26, 2022

Dakar, Senegal

9th World Water Forum

  • The World Water Forum is the world’s biggest water-related event, held every three years to bring together key political actors, business leaders, NGOs, donors, and international organizations to promote dialogue and facilitate access to water and sanitation.  This year’s Forum—under the theme, Water Security for Peace and Development—is jointly organized by the World Water Council (WWC) and the Government of Senegal, and will be the first hosted in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Forum provides a unique platform for the water community and key decision makers to collaborate and make long-term progress on global water challenges. The WWC, notably through the organization of the World Water Forums, has strongly contributed to positioning water as a global political priority.

The 9th World Water Forum will focus on four priorities: 1) water security and sanitation; 2) cooperation; 3) water for rural development; 4) means and tools for implementation of reforms in water and sanitation. Additionally, the Forum will convene a Summit of Heads of States and major international institutions, to advance the political agenda on water and sanitation at the midpoint of the 2030 agenda on implementing the water and sanitation targets and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The World Bank will convene and participate in several sessions and side events, details for which will be announced soon. You can follow along via Twitter using #WWF9.

    Opening Plenary (9:00-12:00)

World Bank Group President David Malpass presented opening remarks at this year's Forum.

Private Sector CEO Panel on Water (14:00-15:30)

With crises of too little, too much, and too polluted water intensifying around the world, the urgency to act to sustain water resources has never been stronger. Recognizing the scale of the challenge, the private sector is leading various innovations to positively disrupt the way it supplies, uses, treats, and finances water. This session brings together leading CEOs in a panel discussion to highlight (a) examples of game-changing approaches, including innovative financing, that companies are advancing, and (b) the opportunity space for competitive collaboration amongst corporates and with governments for achieving water-related impact at scale.

The session will be presided by Makhtar Diop, IFC, Managing Director, World Bank Group EVP, and Paul Bulcke, Nestlé, Chairman of the Board.

    March 22

Keystone Roundtable on Water Security and Sanitation (15:30-17:00)

Enhancing water security requires diversifying water sources (including unconventional sources), improving efficiency and demand management, and putting in place strong regulatory systems, as well as adequate pricing and subsidies policies, among other measures. This entails a comprehensive approach to planning and management of water resources and services.  It also calls for a moving away from the “take, make, dispose” linear model towards circular economy approaches that put valuable resources back in the water system. This session will bring together leaders in the sector to identify critical factors that lead to water security. It will also strengthen the case for rethinking water and sanitation challenges through a circular economy lens thereby delivering services in a more sustainable, inclusive, efficient, and resilient way.

    March 23

Keystone Roundtable on Water and Rural Development (15:30-17:00)

Water is integral to multiple aspects of rural development. Reliable drinking water and sanitation services improve health and wellbeing. Water security and a predictable climate underpin agricultural and pastoral livelihoods. While progress is being made, rural areas lag in access to water and sanitation services, and climate change existentially threatens rural livelihoods in many parts of the world. This high-level panel brings together government leaders from around the world to discuss the full array of contemporary issues and solutions for water in rural development, from basic services to irrigation to water resources management.
