The World Bank is launching the recently developed Supreme Audit Institutions Independence Index to strengthen its own ability and that of other development partners to promote the independence of SAIs globally. The event will launch the index that presents insights into the legal and operational independence of the Supreme Audit Institutions (SAI) of 118 countries, based on a desk review undertaken by staff of the Bank’s Governance Global Practice. SAIs play a pivotal stewardship role in the safeguarding, accountability and efficient use of public resources and contribute to monitoring the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The index will inform and better equip the Bank’s task teams that support capacity-building efforts of SAIs in client countries, including through ongoing collaboration with the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) and development partners. The event will also discuss the emerging challenges and possible opportunities for SAIs to further strengthen their capacity in the post-COVID19 world.
