African countries have led the charge towards progress in many areas. For instance, in the past decade, Africa has implemented the most reforms promoting gender equality of any region globally. Yet, as in other parts of the world, these positive developments have left many groups of people behind. A World Bank report, Inclusion Matters in Africa shows that Africa’s challenges in social inclusion are not unique or exceptional, and highlights examples of the remarkable innovations that abound in Africa and the policy and programmatic movement towards inclusion.
How do we draw from these lessons to create an inclusive recovery in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic? We know that COVID-19 presents huge challenges for inclusion. It continues to upend livelihoods and threatens to push millions more into poverty. As vaccines become available, many are at risk of being excluded. This is why the World Bank and its partners across Africa are prioritizing a recovery from COVID-19 that leaves no one behind.
This event will bring together champions of inclusion for a discussion on the road to achieving a sustainable, resilient—and critically, inclusive—recovery across the African continent. The discussion will feature high-level panelists who will draw on their expertise in public health, jobs, and climate to help frame and set a course for meaningful action.
