The Sanctions Board Secretariat is proud to share the Brazil - StAR Initiative Report: Survey on Direct Recovery of Assets - a report prepared by the Stolen Asset Recovery (StAR) Initiative and the Brazilian Attorney-General’s Office for the G20 Anti-Corruption Working Group (ACWG).
This report details a survey conducted by Brazil’s Attorney General's Office and the StAR Initiative among G20 and guest countries on the direct recovery of assets (DRA) stolen through corruption. The survey reveals that while most countries permit DRA, specific regulations are lacking, leading to underutilization. The report highlights the advantages and disadvantages of DRA compared to mutual legal assistance (MLA), finding that DRA offers more control but can be more resource-intensive. Finally, the report provides recommendations for improving the legal framework and international cooperation to enhance DRA practices.
