Matteo Bugamelli, an Italian national, is the Executive Director for Albania, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, San Marino, and Timor-Leste. He is currently the Dean of the World Bank Board of Executive Directors. He was the Chair of the Board’s Budget Committee from 2020 to 2022 and of the Board’s Audit Committee from 2022 to 2023. He also served on the Board’s Ethics Committee.
Mr. Bugamelli comes from over 20 years of experience working with the Bank of Italy: immediately before joining the WBG Board, he was Director in the Research Department and Coordinator of the Regional Research Branches; and prior to that, he led the Economic Structure and Labor Market Division.
Mr. Bugamelli holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Bologna (Italy) and a PhD in Economics from Columbia University, New York. He has been a visiting scholar in the Department of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley.
Mr. Bugamelli has authored and co-authored several articles on International Trade, International Migration and Remittances, Firm Behavior.
