Previously, Dean was a Research Economist with the Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, an assistant professor at Charles University Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education in Prague, an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Public Policy Institute, and a postdoctoral fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute. Dean currently holds appointments as an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, a research fellow with the Institute for the Study of Labor, and a fellow of the Global Labor Organization.
He received his Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University.
The Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) and the Living Standards Measurement Study-Integrated Surveys on Agriculture (LSMS-ISA) were established by the Development Research Group to explore ways of improving the type and quality of household data collected by statistical offices in developing countries. The goal is to foster increased use of household data as a basis for policy decisionmaking.
