Amit Dar is the Director of Strategy and Operations for Eastern and Southern Africa (AFE), where he supports the vice president in overseeing the implementation of a portfolio of more than 330 projects valued at over $51 billion across 26 countries. Over his 30+ year career with the World Bank, Amit has held various leadership positions within the South Asia and Africa regions of the World Bank including Regional Director for Human Development in Eastern and Southern Africa, Director of Strategy and Operations for the Human Development Practice, and Director of the Education Global Practice. Human capital development remains an area dear to Amit’s heart and is also a key priority of the Eastern and Southern Africa regions along with access to energy, water, and digital growth, ensuring that both girls and boys have equal access to education, nutrition, and a chance at success in life. A notable career highlight for Amit is the Female Secondary Stipend and Assistance Program in Bangladesh, which resulted in more girls getting educated and coming into the labor force and reduced early marriages. Amit considers himself “amazingly lucky” to be working with such a global organization where he not only interacts with people within the organization from diverse cultures and backgrounds but can work with the highest levels of government and people within the community in client countries.
Amit has a dual degree in Mechanical Engineering and Economics from BITS Pilani, India, and a PhD in Economics from Brown University. In his spare time, Amit enjoys taking walks and watching cricket.
