Mental disorders are the largest risk factor for years lived with a disability in Senegal. This is compounded by a steady increase in the number of years lived with a disability due to mental disorders (per 100;000 people) in Senegal over the last decade. Mental health in adulthood is an important determinant of adult productivity and human capital development. A systematic review and meta-analysis of available evidence estimates that mental health interventions are associated with improvements in various labor related outcomes – ability to work; time spent working; functioning at work; education level; and assets. Additionally; parental mental health influences parenting behavior/health; parenting choices; and parent-child interactions. Parenting; especially in early childhood; has significant implications on child health; and cognitive; emotional; social; and behavioral development.  In order to address growing mental health concerns in Senegal; and the associated impact on both productivity and human capital development; the World Bank will pilot and assess Self-Help Plus (SH+) in four communes in Senegal. SH+ is a group-based mental health intervention; developed by the World Health Organization (WHO); which teaches participants stress management skills. This program will be piloted using the delivery mechanisms of the Government of Senegal’s social protection program; which is supported by the World Bank.
