In commemoration of November 5 “World Tsunami Awareness Day”, adopted by the 70th UN General Assembly in December 2015 with recommendation from the Government of Japan, this International Symposium will be organized in Tokyo on October 27, 2016.
The Symposium will refer to specific cases from the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011 and overseas disaster recovery to deepen the discussion on what does resilient society look like and what are the key elements that foster such resilience. Specifically, experts from both within and outside of Japan will be invited as presenters and panelists to focus on: appropriate consensus building process that engages multi-stakeholder including women, people with disability, elderlies, and foreigners; cross-sectoral collaboration such as on environment, ecosystem, and town planning; future perspective on disaster preparedness, mitigation, and recovery that captures historical, cultural, and local community perspectives. The Symposium will produce a set of recommendations for further fostering multi-stakeholder participation and disaster risk reduction (DRR) towards a resilient community.
